The high points of the important festivals are the sacrifices and the trances – as in the Chaitra Jetra – when the siras sit vendidh and many animals come under the knife: goats, pigs, several ducks, and numerous hens and chickens. Lingu Mutak and Tatru usually played the nangerul and kept the main beat; Bansing played the smaller tudbudi, also known as the bitch, which follows the main beat. The children crowd near during the slaughter and watch the axe swing down at a goat’s neck and the blood gush out. For the pigs, a large curved knife is used. The throat is first slit and then the slicing goes on until the animal is completely beheaded. After Chaitra Jetra, the new mel is ‘declared open’, but a few people wait for Welkel, and the new harvest of flowers is used in most homes.
